In this tutorial we will learn how to create a T-shirt mockup with the Texture Brush Tool and Texture panel in Texturino. These methods will not only allow you to use textures in a more convenient way, but also to draw shadows and highlights to create volume on absolutely flat vector objects directly in Adobe Illustrator.

Step 1

First, let’s create the T-shirt shape with a light gray fill using the Pen Tool.

Now draw the neck of the T-shirt, which consists of two shapes. You can delete any pieces of the neck that go beyond the t-shirt using the Shape Builder Tool.

Step 2

Now let us add volume to the T-shirt using Texturino. This plug-in allows you not only to conveniently work with textures, but also to draw creating soft shadows and highlights on vector objects.

Let’s see how it’s done. First, open the Texture panel. To do this go to Window > Texturino > Texture panel or just click on the Texture Tool icon in the Tools panel.

For drawing, we will also need the Texture Brush panel. Go to Window > Texturino > Texture Brush panel or click on the Texture Brush Tool icon in the Tools panel.

It is better to draw using a graphic tablet, Wacom producing the best. This will allow you to use all the features of the Texture Brush Tool. Select the shape of the T-shirts, then choose the “Shadows and Highlights” category and “Shadow” texture in the Texture panel.

Click on the Plus icon in the Texture panel. The T-shirt is now colored in black.

Set 0% Opacity for mask in the Texture Brush panel, choose Shadow for Target Texture, then click on the Reset Mask button. As a result of these actions, the selected object will return to the original color.

Step 3

Turn your Wacom Pen on the eraser side and sweep over the T-shirt. You can also draw with the regular side of the pen, but in this case, hold the Opt / Alt key.

As you can see, in the place of the brush strokes we now get a dark mark.

You can delete some or the entire brush stroke. For this, use the regular side of the pen.
