Vintage Illustration Techniques

Hi guys!

I'm having a horrid time finding any good help or tutorials over the last month regarding the old style lithography, engraving techniques seen in some illustrations.

There is nothing online that shows how to recreate something similar to the images I've provided. They don't have the texture, cross hatching, stippling, and toning like these images.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've tried sketching and scanning and then using the pen tool, but it's turns out too structured.

The images are both vectors.

dasikins, Thank you for the question. I'm going to study this subject. Perhaps I'll create a tutorial.
But sometimes such illustrations are result of the autotracing.

Yes, I was right. If we look at the vector illustration that you cite as an example, we can see that this is a product of the autotracing feature.

Thanks! I was out of town and didn't get an email notification that you responded.

By auto tracing you mean traced from a photo? I downloaded the vector form to study it and the vintage look is definitely lost somewhat.

However, I purchased some more vector resources from shutter stock with a similar litho and etching effect. Although it would be easier to produce from a photo or sketch, I think it can be done in Illustrator.

If you look at the lines you can create a bunch of custom brush strokes by using the wrinkle tool. I mimicked the lines fairly well. Wondering if using a blend and then some masking would complete it.

Looking forward to anything you may try!

Yes.
Of course, you can use custom art brushes, Blend Tool, Width Tool etc. There is WirthScribe plug-in, which is also useful for creating this style. http://www.astutegraphics.com/blog....strator
