Spiral Raster script

posted by: Iaroslav Lazunov, in Illustrator Tutorials / Effects/ Comments: 10

Today we introduce you the Spiral Raster script which converts raster images into vector spirals that look like variable width paths. This script works with the Paper.js. The Paper.js is an open source vector graphics scripting framework that runs on top of the HTML5 Canvas. Yaroslav Tabachkovsky, the developer of Mesh Tormentor, improved the original script. Now we have an opportunity to choose one of three tracing methods and control parameters of the base grid. And the most important is that you can export the tracing result as vector files in the SVG format. In this article you’ll find the Spiral Raster script and the instruction for its use.

The Spiral Raster script works with the following browsers: Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera, EI10+, Safari 6 for OS X Mountain Lion (10.8). You can use raster images in JPG, PNG and GIF formats.

Instruction

1. Drag and drop a raster image into working area of the script (to demonstrate it, I used That face…again by albertofoto).

2. Select the type of the basic grid. This can be a round or a square spiral, and parallel lines.

3. Change the grid settings by using control elements in the form of orange markers. You can change the position of the grid, spacing between its lines, the number of segments, size and the inclination angle.

4. Click on the Trace button.

If you’re not satisfied with the result, click Cancel button then change the type and/or the grid parameters. Click on Download as SVG button and save the file on your hard drive.

5. Open the file in any vector editor, in Adobe Illustrator for example, for further work and print.

I think that images received with the help of the Spiral Raster script can be used in designing t-shirts, business cards and wallpapers.

All the best as you experiment with the Spiral Raster script!

This is an on-line script. You should drag and drop image into Drop zone on this page

I can't find the on-line script either. Do you have a link to it?
On the paper.js site I can find the 'example' spiral raster script, which is very limited. It only has the spiral tracing method.

Guys, the first image on this page is an on-line script. You should drag an image directly in the drop zone under the words: "Drop zone of the Spiral Raster script"

how to make this script to illustrator?

This is an on-line script. So it works only on this page. You should save svg file with your art, and then open it in Illustrator.
