How to Create an Abstract Dynamic Background with Stipplism

Today I’ll show you how to create an abstract background, which consists of a stream of pyramids. It will consist of dynamic elements. This means that you will always be able to change the direction of the stream, to edit any particle to change the parameters of the effects to color objects with the desired color, and finally replace the elements with the newly created ones. Stipplism can provide us with such dynamics. So let’s get started!

Step 1

Create a pyramid using the Pen Tool (P). Color sides of the pyramid in different shades of grey.

Let’s create two parallel paths of different widths on one side of the pyramid.

We apply a linear gradient across stroke from black to grey.

Then apply the Screen blending mode to the objects.

Now limit the visibility of paths using the Clipping mask.

Using this technique, create two more pyramids in other positions, as shown in the picture below.

Step 2

Save the first pyramid as a symbol in the Symbols panel.

Select the two remaining pyramids, then go to Object> Create Symbol Variants…. This function belongs to the Stipplism plug-in, which is the main tool for creating the dynamic abstract background in this tutorial. In the open dialog box, select the desired symbol from the drop down list and untick Delete Selected Art After Symbol Creation, since we will still need these shapes.

Click OK, now there are two versions of the first symbol in the Symbols panel.
