Final Image Preview
Some time ago I was inspired by the beautiful abstract flowers created by Sandra (mikiverevikim) using ink pen and paper. I’ve always wanted to try and create a similar styled pattern in Adobe Illustrator, but without having the proper tools, I have been putting it off. Now that we have MirrorMe, the long-awaited tool that mirrors your artwork instantly on one single or multiple reflective axes, this task should be simple!
Create stylized flowers using MirrorMe (Apply to Layer)
Step 1
Let’s start creating this stylized flower. Take the MirrorMe Tool and click on the artboard.
Open the MirrorMe Panel (Window > MirrorMe > MirrorMe panel) and set the number of axes of symmetry to 8, then click on Apply to Layer in the annotation system or in the MirrorMe panel.
Now everything you draw in the Active sector will be dynamically reflected in the other sectors.
Step 2
I’m going to draw with the help of the Dynamic Sketch Tool (Dynamic Sketch plug-in), although any drawing tools, both standard and those designed by Astute Graphics, will work for drawing in the "Apply to Layer” mode. Open the Dynamic Sketch Panel (Window > Dynamic Sketch > Dynamic Sketch panel) and set the minimum and maximum weight of your stroke. If you are using a Wacom tablet then choose Stylus Pressure from the drop down menu. If you are using a mouse to draw choose Sketching Speed from the menu.
Now create a path from point A to point B, crossing the vertical axis.
As you can see, just one path was enough to create eight petals for the flower. Additionally, at the intersecting point of the axis and path, the path was connected with its reflection, and its continuation beyond the active sector was immediately deleted.
Step 3
If you wish to make any changes, you can edit the position of the path using the Direct Selection Tool or the InkScribe Tool (InkScribe plug-in).
You can also control the width of the variable width stroke by using the Width Tool or one of the tools of the WidthScribe plug-in. The Width Selector tool is excellent for this.
