Today we will talk about shapes of pattern tiles and how to combine the dynamic features of MirrorMe and Pattern Maker to produce complex-looking but easy to make seamless patterns. Let’s create something interesting!

Tile of the seamless pattern can only have a certain type of shape. This can be a rectangle, square, hexagon and rhombus. In addition pattern tile may be in the shape of a parallelogram with strict aspect ratio of the sides and angle of inclination.

This shape is used to shift the tiles relatively to each other. I advise you not to use a parallelogram as a shape of tiles to avoid extra calculations; we can easily get the required offset using one of the presets of Brick Offset in the Pattern Options panel.

Now, knowing the required shapes of the tiles of the seamless pattern, we can implement dynamic symmetry using MirrorMe. Let’s look at a simple example of how this can be done. Let’s create a square using the Rectangle Tool (M) and two diagonals using the Line Tool (\). Select the created objects, then convert them into the guides (View > Guides > Make Guides (Cmd / Ctrl + 5)). Lock the Guides.

Take the MirrorMe Tool, set the center of symmetry at the point of intersection of the diagonals, select two axes of symmetry and angle of 45 degrees in the MirrorMe panel. Now click Apply to Layer in the annotation system or in the panel.
