3D Text Effect Using The Appearance Panel and Stylism

posted by: Iaroslav Lazunov, in Illustrator Tutorials / Text Effect/ Comments: 1

In today’s tutorial we will learn how to use the Appearance panel and Stylism plug-in for creating a complex 3D text effect. You will learn how to use Stylism to add effects and target fills or strokes.

Step 1

Take the Type Tool (T) and create the letter S. I used Myriad Pro font for this example.

Open the Appearance panel (Window > Appearance). Keeping the letter S selected, create a new fill by pressing the Add New Fill icon in the panel.

Replace the black fill with a vertical linear gradient, which consists of two shades of blue.

Double-click on the Characters attribute in the Appearance panel, then remove the black fill.

Now double click on the Type attribute in the panel.

Add another new fill in the Appearance panel, then set it with a new gradient which consists of three shades of blue, as it is shown below.

Step 2

Next we will be applying live Illustrator Effects using Stylism. After installing the plug-in (available as a free 14 day trial), the Stylism Tool icon appears on the Tools panel. To open its panel, go to Window > Stylism > Stylism panel.
